What Is DTF Printing?

Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing is a modern garment decoration method that prints full-color designs onto a special PET transfer film using water-based DTF inks. A hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink and cured, creating a ready-to-press transfer.

The cured transfer is heat-pressed onto virtually any fabric — cotton, polyester, nylon, leather, denim, and more — delivering vibrant colors, sharp detail, and exceptional wash durability without the limitations of screen printing or DTG printing.

No pretreatment required. Works on dark and light fabrics. No run minimums. CobraFlex also pioneered powderless DTF printing — a next-generation process that eliminates adhesive powder entirely, reducing steps, mess, and cost.

What Is a UV DTF Printer?

UV DTF printing uses ultraviolet-curable inks printed onto a special AB film. Unlike fabric DTF, UV DTF transfers bond to hard, rigid surfaces — perfect for promotional products, custom merchandise, and industrial labeling.

Popular applications include custom tumblers and drinkware, phone cases, laptop skins, wood signs, glass, ceramic, acrylic, and metal surfaces. No heat press is needed — the transfer is applied with hand pressure.

CobraFlex carries UV DTF printers across multiple print widths, from compact desktop units for small shops to wide-format machines built for high-volume production — all with full technical support.

DTF Inks & Transfer Film — What to Know

DTF Inks are specially formulated water-based pigment inks designed for PET film printing. Inferior inks lead to clogged print heads, dull colors, and poor washability.

CobraFlex's American-made DTF inks are available in a full CMYK + White set, plus specialty colors — Orange, Green, Fluorescent Magenta, and Fluorescent Yellow — enabling an expanded color gamut for vivid, eye-catching prints.

White ink is the foundation of every DTF transfer, creating the under-base that makes colors pop on dark fabrics. CobraFlex white ink is formulated for maximum opacity and reliable circulation to prevent settling and clogging.

DTF Film (PET transfer film) is the substrate your printer deposits ink onto. Film quality directly impacts print sharpness, color accuracy, and transfer performance.

CobraFlex stocks both cold-peel and hot-peel DTF film in widths compatible with all major printer formats. Cold-peel film produces a matte finish ideal for fine detail. Hot-peel film is peeled immediately after pressing for faster production throughput.

All CobraFlex film is matched to their inks for optimal adhesion, powder bonding, and clean, residue-free transfers on finished garments.

Frequently Asked Questions About DTF Printing

  • A DTF (Direct-to-Film) printer uses water-based pigment inks to print designs directly onto PET transfer film. Hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink and cured in an oven or built-in dryer. The transfer is then heat-pressed onto fabric at approximately 300–330°F for 10–15 seconds, permanently bonding the design to the textile. Browse CobraFlex DTF printers →
  • CobraFlex DTF inks are American-made and formulated specifically for high-performance DTF printing. They deliver exceptional color vibrancy, deep blacks, accurate skin tones, and outstanding wash durability. The white ink is optimized for consistent circulation and maximum opacity. Specialty colors including fluorescent options expand your printable color gamut far beyond standard CMYK. Shop DTF inks →
  • Hot-peel DTF film is removed from the garment while the transfer is still warm, enabling faster production and a slightly glossy finish. Cold-peel film requires the transfer to fully cool before peeling, producing a softer matte look and superior detail on fine lines and small text. CobraFlex carries both types. View film options →
  • UV DTF printers can decorate almost any hard flat or curved surface: tumblers, water bottles, coffee mugs, phone cases, laptop skins, keychains, wooden signs, glass panels, ceramic tiles, acrylic awards, metal business cards, and more. No heat press is required — transfers are applied with hand pressure using a squeegee or roller. Explore UV DTF printers →
  • Powderless DTF (also called no-powder DTF) eliminates the adhesive powder step found in traditional DTF workflows. CobraFlex pioneered this process using specially formulated inks and film that bond during curing without hot-melt powder, resulting in a faster, cleaner production process with reduced material costs and zero powder mess in the workspace.
